The Types of Pipes Used in Plumbing

04 / 12 / 2024

When it comes to your home’s plumbing system, a network of pipes is responsible for carrying water throughout your house. Understanding the types of pipes used in your plumbing system can be beneficial for both homeowners and potential residents. Peterson Mechanical is here to shed light on four of the most common types of pipes you’ll find in a residential setting.

1. PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride):

PVC is a popular and affordable choice for cold water supply lines, drain lines, and vent stacks.  It’s lightweight, easy to install, and resistant to corrosion.  However, PVC isn’t ideal for hot water lines as it can warp under high temperatures. Additionally, PVC pipes exposed to sunlight for extended periods can become brittle. PVC pipes are also relatively inexpensive compared to other materials, making them cost-effective for various applications.

2. Copper:

Copper pipes are known for their durability and resistance to corrosion and high temperatures. This makes them a great choice for both hot and cold water lines. They can last for decades and are a symbol of quality plumbing in many homes. However, copper is the most expensive option on this list, and requires a skilled plumber for installation due to the soldering process involved.

3. Cast Iron:

Cast iron pipes are incredibly strong and can withstand a lot of pressure. In the past, they were widely used for drain lines and vent stacks.  However, their weight and susceptibility to rust have led to them being phased out in favor of lighter and more corrosion-resistant options like PVC and ABS.  That being said, you may still find cast iron pipes in older homes, although they require regular maintenance to prevent rust and corrosion.

4. ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene):

Similar to PVC, ABS is a lightweight and affordable plastic commonly used for drain lines and vent stacks.  However, unlike PVC, ABS can handle higher temperatures, making it suitable for drain lines from sinks and washing machines.  ABS is also known for its black color, which helps differentiate it from the white PVC pipes used for cold water supply.
