What Is Mechanical Engineering?

Mechanical engineering is a branch of engineering concerned primarily with the industrial application of mechanics and with the production of tools, machinery, and their products.

What this means is that a lot of the things you interact with on a daily basis-from the doorknob to your house to the car that you drive-was once just a project being worked on by a mechanical engineer. Mechanical engineering may be the single oldest discipline of engineering, as many of the principles discovered by the Romans are still in use today.

The field of mechanical engineering emerged as its own discipline in the 18th Century, as the first steam engines and large mechanical projects were being designed and built. Mechanical engineering includes a massive number of related disciplines under its umbrella and there are an amazing number of products and creations that have a mechanical engineer somewhere in their creation.

Here are some of the things that mechanical engineers do:

• Create schematics and plans for things that need precision manufacturing and creation.
• Analyze problems and issues, with the goal of figuring out solutions.
• Develop and test prototypes of the things they create, collect the results, and use the results to improve the prototypes.
• Oversee the manufacturing process of the devices they create.
• Manage a team of professionals to work on larger projects.

In the United States, becoming a mechanical engineer requires a four-year college degree, at least four years of internship with other mechanical engineers, and passing a licensing test. Once the test is passed, the mechanical engineer is now called a Professional Engineer.

In most developed countries, certain types of construction projects require a mechanical engineer to review and formally check all the requirements for the project.
